The biggest mistake is adding too much. More is not better. A potting mix overloaded with biochar can become unbalanced, especially if it crowds out the materials responsible for consistent moisture, nutrition and root contact.
The second mistake is using the wrong type. Decorative charcoal, cooking charcoal and random black chunks from a firepit are not suitable substitutes. Houseplants are sensitive to residues and contaminants, particularly in the confined environment of a container.
The third is expecting biochar to fix watering habits. If a plant sits in a cache pot full of standing water, or if it is kept in a mix that does not suit its species, biochar cannot rescue the situation on its own. Good growing media support good care - they do not replace it.
Finally, avoid forgetting the plant itself. A fern, a string of pearls and a phalaenopsis orchid may all live indoors, but they do not want the same root environment. The best results come when you build the mix around the plant rather than around a trend.
