2. The potting mix

The mix decides how long water stays around the roots and how much air remains available after watering. Generic multi-purpose compost is often too dense for indoor growing, especially in lower light or cooler rooms where evaporation is slow.

Houseplants generally benefit from a peat-free mix with a more open structure, often improved with ingredients such as pumice, bark, coir or biochar. Orchids need a chunkier, airier medium altogether, while cacti and succulents do best in gritty mixes that dry quickly and resist compaction.

The goal is not to create a pot full of dry rubble. It is to build structure. Pumice helps open the mix and improves airflow. Bark increases pore space. Coir supports moisture retention without the flat, heavy feel of some standard composts. Used thoughtfully, these ingredients help you tune drainage to the plant rather than forcing every plant into the same blend.

3. Watering habits

Even the best mix cannot compensate for constant overwatering. Good drainage works hand in hand with good timing. Watering little and often can be less effective than watering thoroughly and then waiting until the plant genuinely needs more. A full drench encourages even moisture through the root zone, and the pause afterwards lets oxygen return.

How long that pause should be depends on the plant, the light, the season and the room temperature. A calathea in active growth will not behave like a sansevieria in January. This is where observation beats routine. Check the top few centimetres of the mix, feel the weight of the pot, and learn how quickly each plant uses moisture in your home.

Common drainage mistakes that catch even experienced plant owners

Adding a layer of stones to the bottom of a pot is one of the most persistent myths in houseplant care. It sounds sensible, but it does not improve drainage in the way people hope. In practice, it can raise the zone of saturation higher into the root area. It is better to use the right pot with a suitable mix from top to bottom.

Another mistake is assuming yellow leaves always mean too much water or, conversely, always too little. Drainage issues often sit behind both diagnoses. If the roots are stressed, the plant cannot regulate itself properly.

There is also a tendency to blame the watering can when the real issue is the substrate. If your mix has compacted and shrunk from the edges, or stays heavy for many days after watering, repotting into a fresher, better-structured medium may solve more than changing your schedule ever will.

How to improve drainage without starting from scratch

Not every plant needs an immediate full repot. If the plant is broadly healthy but the mix feels slightly heavy, you can often make practical adjustments. Water less frequently, increase light if appropriate, empty saucers promptly, and make sure the plant is not sitting in trapped water inside a decorative pot.

Choose a pot with proper drainage holes, avoid overpotting, and select a peat-free specialist mix suited to the plant type. If water rushes straight through and the root ball never absorbs enough moisture, the plant can become stressed in a different way. That balance is why premium, purpose-led mixes matter. A well-designed houseplant substrate should drain freely while still holding enough moisture for the plant to use. You are aiming for a healthy rhythm, not a constant emergency on either side.
