A pot that is only slightly too large can leave a favourite houseplant sitting in damp compost for far longer than its roots can comfortably manage. Buy too little, meanwhile, and repotting day becomes an awkward pause halfway through. A houseplant soil calculator takes the guesswork out of the quantity, so you can prepare the right amount of peat-free mix and give every plant a clean, confident start.

The number it gives you is a useful planning figure, not a reason to fill every pot to the brim. Healthy repotting depends on the plant’s root ball, the shape of the pot and the type of growing media as much as the pot’s stated size. Think of the calculation as your starting point, then adjust it with your plant in front of you.

How a houseplant soil calculator works

Most calculators estimate the volume inside a pot in litres. You enter the pot’s diameter and height, and the calculation converts that space into an approximate amount of potting mix. For a round pot, the underlying formula is straightforward:

Volume in litres = 3.14 × radius² × height ÷ 1,000

Measure the radius as half the pot’s inside diameter, and use centimetres for every measurement. A pot measuring 16cm across inside and 15cm deep, for example, has a radius of 8cm. Its full internal volume is roughly 3 litres.

That is not necessarily the amount of mix you will use. Once the existing root ball goes in, it occupies much of that room. In practical terms, a houseplant soil calculator tells you the pot’s capacity, while the final quantity needed is the capacity minus the root ball.

For most repotting jobs, allowing for around half to two-thirds of the new pot’s full volume is a sensible first estimate. A densely rooted plant in a modestly larger pot may need less. A plant with a compact root system, or one moving from a nursery pot into a deeper decorative planter, may need more.

Measure the pot, not the label

A 14cm pot is usually described by its top diameter, not its internal soil volume. Tapered pots are particularly deceptive: they look generous at the rim but narrow considerably towards the base. Measure the inside width at the top, the inside depth, and, where possible, the inside width near the bottom.

If the pot is markedly tapered, use the average of the top and bottom diameters for a more realistic result. There is no need for laboratory precision. Potting mix is sold in bags rather than millilitres, and a small surplus is far more useful than discovering you are short by a handful.

Square and rectangular planters are even easier to estimate. Multiply the internal length by width by height, then divide by 1,000 to find litres. Again, subtract the space taken up by the root ball before deciding how much mix to open.

It is also worth checking whether a decorative pot is being used as a cachepot. If your plant remains in its nursery pot inside an outer cover pot, do not fill the cover pot with soil. The nursery pot needs to be lifted out for watering and allowed to drain properly. Soil belongs in a planter with drainage holes, not at the bottom of a vessel with nowhere for excess water to escape.

Choose the next pot size with care

More soil is not always better. Moving a houseplant into a pot that is 2-5cm wider than its current nursery pot is enough for most established plants. This gives new roots room to grow without creating a large reservoir of unused, slow-drying mix around them.

Fast-growing plants with vigorous roots, such as monstera, pothos and peace lilies, may welcome the upper end of that range when they are clearly rootbound. Slow-growing plants, including many hoyas, sansevierias and ZZ plants, often prefer a more restrained move. Orchids and succulents have their own rules: their mixes need especially reliable airflow and they generally should not be overpotted.

A larger pot also changes your watering rhythm. More mix holds more moisture, particularly in a cool room or through a dim British winter. If your plant has struggled with overwatering before, choose the smallest sensible step up and a more open mix rather than relying on a larger pot to solve the problem.

A practical quantity guide

As a working guide, a 12cm pot often needs about 0.5-1 litre of mix around a root ball. A 15cm pot commonly uses 1-1.5 litres, while a 20cm pot may take 2-3 litres. For a 25cm floor plant pot, expect roughly 4-6 litres depending on its depth and the size of the plant you are moving.

These ranges are deliberately broad. A shallow bowl planter and a tall cylinder with the same diameter will use very different amounts. Keep a little extra mix aside, especially when repotting several plants or topping up tired soil in existing pots.

Quantity is only half the calculation

The best amount of soil can still perform poorly if it is the wrong type for the plant. Growing media should hold enough moisture and nutrients for steady growth, while keeping air spaces around the roots. That balance changes from plant to plant.

A leafy tropical houseplant usually benefits from a moisture-retentive but airy peat-free houseplant mix. Pumice can increase drainage and long-term structure, particularly for plants growing in bright positions or terracotta pots. Worm castings are valuable as a gentle nutrient-rich amendment, but use them as part of a balanced mix rather than filling a pot with them.

For cacti and succulents, a grittier, faster-draining mix is the safer choice. Their roots need moisture to pass through efficiently, and dense compost can stay wet for too long. Orchids need a specialist medium with pronounced air pockets, not ordinary houseplant compost. Their roots are adapted to breathe, and a fine mix can quickly cause problems.

If you are creating your own blend, use the calculator to work out the total volume first. You can then divide that total by your chosen proportions. For example, for 4 litres of a chunkier aroid mix, you might use around 2.5 litres of houseplant mix, 1 litre of pumice and 0.5 litres of worm castings. The exact balance depends on your home, your watering habits and the plant’s needs.

Do not use drainage layers to make up the difference

It can be tempting to fill the bottom of a large pot with LECA, stones or broken crocks to use less soil. In most cases, this does not improve drainage. It simply reduces the root space and can create a wetter zone just above the layer, where fine soil meets coarse material.

Use a pot with drainage holes and fill it with an appropriate, well-structured growing medium instead. LECA has a useful role in semi-hydro growing, propagation and certain decorative applications, but it is not a shortcut for correcting an oversized or poorly draining planter.

The same principle applies to packing material. Choose a pot that suits the plant rather than trying to make an unsuitable container work. Your plant will be easier to water, monitor and move when its root environment is simple and well matched.

Make repotting day calmer

Before opening the bag, set out the new pot, growing media, a scoop, a clean pair of snips and a surface that can catch loose compost. Watering the plant lightly a day or two beforehand can make it easier to remove from its old pot, although avoid repotting a plant that is saturated and heavy.

Add a shallow base layer of mix, position the root ball so the plant sits at the same height it did before, then fill around the sides in small amounts. Gently settle the pot with a tap rather than compressing the mix firmly. Roots need structure, but they also need air.

Leave a small watering gap beneath the rim. About 1-2cm is usually enough and prevents water spilling over the side each time you give the plant a drink. Finish with a neat pot topping if you enjoy a more considered display, but keep the crown of the plant clear and avoid burying stems.

A little leftover mix is not waste. Keep it sealed, dry and ready for cuttings, top-ups or the next plant that quietly tells you it has outgrown its pot. With the right calculation and a purpose-made mix, repotting becomes less of a mess-and-guess job and more of a satisfying reset for the season ahead.
