If the roots are sitting in a mix that stays soggy, compacts too quickly or dries into a hard block, the plant never really gets the chance to thrive. A good houseplant mix is not really about soil in the garden sense. For most indoor plants, it is better to think in terms of a root environment. You are creating the right balance of moisture retention, airflow, drainage, stability and nutrition for a plant growing in a pot, not in open ground. Different ingredients each play a part in that balance, and the best mixes are built with purpose rather than habit.
Most indoor growers do not need to memorise laboratory terms. What helps is knowing whether an ingredient holds water, opens up the mix, feeds the plant, or improves long-term structure. Once you can spot those roles, you can match a substrate to a thirsty fern, a chunky aroid or a drought-tolerant succulent with much more confidence.
There is also no single perfect recipe. A mix that works beautifully in a warm, bright flat in Manchester may stay too wet in a cooler room in Glasgow. Its strength is moisture retention with a light texture, but it is not a complete mix on its own for every plant. Perlite is the small, white, lightweight material often seen in potting mixes. Its main job is to improve aeration and drainage. It helps break up heavier blends and reduces the risk of the root zone becoming stagnant.
It is useful, affordable and easy to work with, though it is so light that it can float to the top over time. Some growers also dislike the dusty finish or the way it shifts in very coarse mixes. Still, in the right blend, perlite does a straightforward job very well.
Pumice also improves drainage and aeration, but it behaves differently from perlite. It is heavier, more stable and less likely to migrate to the surface. That makes it particularly appealing in premium houseplant mixes, especially for larger pots, cacti, succulents and plants that benefit from a mineral element in the root zone.
Because pumice has weight, it can help anchor top-heavy plants. It also holds a little moisture within its porous structure while still keeping the mix open. For many indoor gardeners, it offers a neater, more durable alternative to perlite.
Worm castings are a gentle, natural source of nutrition and beneficial microbial activity. In a houseplant mix, they are usually included to add fertility without the harshness of strong synthetic feeding. They can support steady growth and healthier root development, especially in nutrient-hungry foliage plants.
More is not always better, though. Too much can make a blend richer and denser than some plants need. Worm castings are best used as a supporting ingredient rather than the bulk of the mix, particularly for orchids, succulents and species that prefer leaner conditions.
Biochar is a porous charcoal-like material used to improve structure and support the root environment. It can help with moisture balance, create habitat for beneficial microbes and contribute to longer-term resilience in a potting mix.
It is not a miracle ingredient, but it can be a very smart one. In balanced quantities, biochar adds another layer of structure to peat-free mixes and can work especially well alongside coir, bark and composted materials.
For cacti and succulents, mineral ingredients such as grit can help increase drainage and reduce water retention. They make a mix freer-flowing and less likely to stay wet around the roots. In some specialist blends, they provide the dry, airy character these plants prefer.
Fine sand is more complicated. In containers, it can sometimes do the opposite of what people expect, especially if mixed into already dense compost. Rather than automatically reaching for sand, it is often better to use a purpose-made cactus or succulent mix with a well-judged mineral structure.
LECA, or lightweight expanded clay aggregate, is better known from semi-hydro growing, but it also has a place in houseplant care more broadly. The clay balls create excellent air space and can be used for propagation, drainage layers in certain setups, or full semi-hydro systems.
As a full substitute for potting mix, LECA changes the care routine quite a lot. Watering, feeding and pot choice all work differently. It can be brilliant for some growers and some plants, but it is not the easiest route for everyone who simply wants a better compost blend.
The most useful way to read a label is to ask what the mix is trying to achieve. A foliage houseplant blend might use coir for moisture retention, bark for structure, pumice or perlite for drainage, and worm castings for nutrition. An orchid mix may lean heavily on bark and coarse materials to keep roots airy. A cactus mix will usually include more mineral content and far less water-holding material.

Orchids are another category where ingredients matter enormously. Many common orchids are epiphytes, so their roots need oxygen as much as moisture. Dense compost around orchid roots is a fast route to rot, while a bark-led mix keeps conditions much closer to what the plant can actually use.
Cacti and succulents need restraint. Rich, moisture-retentive houseplant compost often keeps them too wet for too long, especially through a British winter. A sharper, grittier, more mineral-led mix is usually the safer choice.
